Podcast Episodes – Traders Podcast

As we wrap up the end of 2013, your host Rob Booker and the producer Jason Pyles discuss Martin Scorsese’s scandalous new film, “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Having read the book that this movie is adapted from, Rob gives us his 2 cents and talks about the degree of realism this movie achieves. This episode begins with Rob asking for Jason’s Top 10 Movies of 2013 list. And we conclude this episode with Rob’s recommendation of the greatest thing he’s read all year, as well as a little reflection on the podcast episodes released in 2013. Thanks for listening, and happy new year!

Merry Christmas! Welcome to Episode 214 of The Traders Podcast. Your host Rob Booker and his producer, Jason Pyles, recorded this show on Christmas Eve, and we hope you’ll find it to be an enjoyable stocking-stuffer. For this show, Rob and Jason delve into the mysterious world of bitcoin digital currency. Inevitably, they also briefly talk about the Deep Web and The Silk Road. Rob and Jason also discuss whether it would be wise to get in on some of this bitcoin action… And naturally, there’s discussion about how “Matrix-like” bitcoin is — and whether a government could ever track it well enough to tax it.

Will bitcoin or gold (or something else) be the answer when the end-of-the-world apocalypse comes? Rob also talks about why you should consider purchasing some land in Montana, whether social media has an value on a long-term basis, and some other things. All of these wacky topics and many more are waiting for you in this special, 40-minute Christmas episode of The Traders Podcast. Thanks for listening. Merry Christmas!

Here is a bitcoin chart, as promised: Bitcoin Chart

Buckle up! Episode 213 of The Traders Podcast has a little edge to it. Your host Rob Booker warns that his 23 Rules for Trading may be a bit vulgar. He calls them the rules that he can’t share with your children, your parents or your grandparents. In this episode you’ll hear rules like, The Market Likes It Rough; and Size Does Matter; and If You Don’t Have Size, Have Some Skills, just to name a few. Rob also reveals what was the dumbest thing anybody ever said to him, as well as specific instructions for how to prepare to be a trader on Wall Street. This episode is quite memorable, indeed. Especially Rule 20. Thanks for listening.

In Episode 212 of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker and his producer, Jason Pyles, dip into the mailbag, so to speak, and address some comments left on the Web site. First they talk about a comment from Tracey, which leads Rob and Jason to talk about whether they should be angrier on the podcast. They also discuss “The Walking Dead,” which leads to a conversation about our patience and tolerance for letting a trade go sideways.

Next we read a question from Ryan about Rob’s forthcoming book(s), so Rob describes “Man vs. Market” and a second book that may tentatively be titled “The Market Doesn’t Give an F— About You.” Rob also answers a comment from Bernie about containing losses, and Felix asks about Rob’s Wallaby indicator. Rob and Jason also answer the question: How long will The Traders Podcast last? How many episodes will it release? Listen to Episode 212 to find out! Thanks for your comments.

In Episode 211, your favorite armchair philosopher and podcast host Rob Booker describes the unseemly text message chain that’s been created over the past 8 months through his correspondence with fellow traders Shonn Campbell and Matt LaCoco. The subject of this episode was sparked when Shonn sent a page from a book he’s reading, and Rob shares this excerpt about some naked wise men sitting in the path of Alexander the Great. This little anecdote leads to some musing about ambition. Rob tells us the truth about ambition — what it is, and what it isn’t; when it’s useful and when it’s useless. So, listen to Episode 211 and get ready to philosophize with The Traders Podcast.

In Episode 210, your host Rob Booker asks, “How do you become a confident trader?” He answers by recounting more of his adventures from his trading tour from April of this year. Rob tells the story of David, an amazing friend he visited during his trip. In this episode Rob asks if we can want something too badly. Rob talks about how confident traders don’t “chase the market.” Rob says his friend David chased the market, so he gave him counsel to help David get what he wants from the market. Rob gives some steps to also help the listeners of this podcast get what they want. If you’re tired and breathless from chasing the market, listen to this episode and start making the market work for you, because confident traders don’t chase the market.

Welcome to The Traders Podcast. In Episode 209, your host Rob Booker talks about when all the wind is out of your sails and you just don’t feel like doing anything. He describes those days where you’ve missed a trade, and it completely drains you of your enthusiasm for trading. Rob also talks about the times when you’re stalking a trade like a creeper — and after stalking it forever — it still never triggers. Rob calls these severe emotional swings “Trading Bipolarism.” He describes an experience he had with this phenomenon over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Jason asks Rob if there’s a way to be preemptive and stop Trading Bipolarism before it sets in. Rob talks about turning a perfectionist into a procrastinator. And Rob also discusses the problem with looking for a quick fix as a coping mechanism in order to avoid other things. But Rob and Jason bring it home by discussing the benefits of calling upon past happiness — true victories that truly mattered — in order to get you through the present. If you’re a trader, then you’ve probably already experienced Trading Bipolarism, so you don’t want to miss this one! Thanks for listening.

Episode 208 is a sifting episode — a Traders Podcast episode to help separate the sheep from the goats, or more precisely, the Loser Trader from the Confident Trader. In this show, your host Rob Booker will describe the characteristics of the Loser Trader versus the characteristics of the Confident Trader. Which one are you?

Rob says the Loser Trader is obsessed with loss and all the “could have beens” and “should have dones.” The Loser Trader wastes time thinking about losses. His previous trade affects his next trade. He wishes he could have his money back. The Loser Trader often allows himself to feel guilt, sorrow and shame.

Next Rob contrasts the Loser Trader with the mind of the Confident Trader, the trader who lives a simple life and never dwells on the past. The Confident Trader’s goal is to practice right trading, not to make a certain amount of money per day. The Confident Trader has an infinite time horizon. In Episode 208 Rob spends time describing both types. Again, we ask you to ponder… which kind of trader are you?

We hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. For Episode 207, your host Rob Booker spends more time exploring the subject of “process,” an approach to trading discussed in Episode 202, where goals don’t really matter; all that matters is having a process. Also in this episode, you’ll hear about how Shonn Campbell directed Rob’s attention to an article in the Wall Street Journal by Scott Adams titled Secret of Success: Failure by Scott Adams. Rob uses this article and his memory of a breakfast he had with Shonn Campbell, Matt LaCoco and Bradley Fried in April 2013, to ultimately talk about spending less time trading while making more money, struggling less — and winning more. Don’t miss it!

Happy Thanksgiving! For Episode 206, your host Rob Booker solocasts and recounts a tale from April 2013 when he and Bradley Fried traveled across America, talking to traders. Rob says there are no original stories and explains why trading is the worst place to play God. He also talks about a common phenomenon where people think they’re different (when they’re actually not). And Rob tells a story of an adventure he had in a bookstore as an eavesdropper. All this and more in Episode 206 of The Traders Podcast. Thanks for listening.

For Episode 205, your host Rob Booker muses about the facets of change. Rob also talks about two steps that traders can take to avoid the equivalent of “home buyers’ remorse” in trading. Rob also discusses scaling in to a position. Rob talks about our tendency to add to our losing positions and yet, when things are going well, we tend to slam on the brakes.

Rob also recommends some good resources for traders during this episode. You can find some good information by going to Investopedia.com and looking up support and resistance. Rob also recommends reading Pring on Price Patterns by Martin Pring. Then there’s Edwards and McGee’s Technical Analysis of Stock Trends — another great resource. Also, Rob says you can order excellent DVDs on support and resistance trading at FXStreet.com. And Rob says you should also check out Edge Trading.co.

In this final part 3 of 3 series of episodes (spanning 202 through 204), your host Rob Booker addresses a third way of thinking about trading that isn’t goal oriented or process oriented. The Shoshin or “Beginner’s Mind” Approach to trading completely disregards ambition, and instead, actually assumes an attitude that is the opposite of ambitious. This approach comes from the idea of getting something by not striving to get something!

Rob grounds this abstract discussion by citing a few passages from his all-time favorite book, Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind. And during this episode, Rob addresses the phenomenon of the uncanny “beginner’s luck” that brand-new traders often enjoy as they begin their journey with the market. In this episode, Rob also talks about how a trader might go about releasing his or her ego and becoming one with the market. So, tune in and be at peace with The Traders Podcast.

In the previous episode of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker discussed committing to a process, rather than an end result. Episode 203 is part 2 of this discussion where Rob lays out a second methodology based solely on goals and outcomes. No limits. No boundaries. A mix between the law of attraction and the law of the jungle. So, Rob details the finer points of this “Alpha Cave-Person Approach,” and then he talks about how this Wild West sort of approach relates to having a 10-week year. This discussion is the second part of a three-part series that spans over Episodes 202 through 204 of The Traders Podcast. Don’t miss it!

About a month and a half before we reach New Year’s and a time of resolution-making, your host Rob Booker explains how he has moved from the Gregorian calendar to using a 10-week year. So, Rob details his relatively newfound schedule and how it works.

Next we dip into the mailbag and read a hilarious comment from James. Then Anthony from South Africa wrote to ask about trading competitions and whether their winners’ incredible results are legitimately possible. This leads to an intriguing discussion of the reality of making huge profits and how consistently it can be done.

And finally, Rob wraps up this episode by talking about implementing a process — and committing to that process — instead of solely striving for a specific end result. This discussion will become the first part of a three-part series that spans over Episodes 202 through 204 of The Traders Podcast. Don’t miss it!

We’re pleased to bring you another provocative solocast by your host, Rob Booker. In Episode 201, Rob explains how the worst traders have the worst kind of confidence. He shares a scary scenario from 12 years ago, and he poses the questions: Is day trading a total scam? Does it ruin lives? Rob tackles these questions and then carefully describes how we first ruin ourselves, then we ruin our trading accounts.

Next Rob talks about how trading is like religion, and he talks about the sorrow that comes from believing that trading is The Answer. Rob runs with this metaphor and discusses leaving the religion of trading and explains that trading is not The Answer, but something else… And finally, Rob encourages traders to become more rational — even hyper-rational.

If you’ve been feeling like you need to reflect on yourself as a trader, then this episode is definitely for you. Thanks for listening to The Traders Podcast.

For Episode 200 of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker joins his trusty producer, Jason Pyles — in person in Salt Lake City — at the home of special guest Jared Johnson, the CEO, founder and president of Day Traders FX.com. To celebrate this monumental show, Rob and Jason spend some time reflecting over 200 episodes. And Rob talks about how in podcasting and trading, you just can be on your game every time…

Jared talks about how awful August 2013 was for his trading. And Rob talks about being his own worst enemy (particularly in trading) and watching himself do damage to himself. This leads to a discussion about the necessity to slog through the bad periods to get back to good again.

Rob mentions that he recently revisited Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” album, which made him think about the kind of walls we build around ourselves. Rob also talks about how we have visions of a spectacular future, and we make plans surrounding future success, but oftentimes, we end up merely having sufficient success, but that’s still remarkable. And Rob asks Jason and Jared if they consider themselves to be successful and comments on whether he considers himself successful.

And finally, Rob and Jason speculate about the future of The Traders Podcast. Thank you for listening to 200 episodes. It has been our honor and pleasure to bring them to traders around the world.

In Episode 199, your host Rob Booker delivers a raw, bare bones solocast where he riffs on all the problems associated with when things are going well. Rob talks about the dark problem with euphoria, and he also identifies what is your most powerful ally in your battle with the market. Rob speaks about the pitfall of mistaking one’s own greatness.

But most importantly, Rob addresses the show-no-emotion brand of trading and learning to calm the hell down. Rob also lists and expounds on the four steps to removing emotion from your trading, and he concludes by reading a poem from 1940. Enjoy!

In another great solocast, your host Rob Booker sorts through the listener mailbag and gets a nice e-mail from David Pullen, from Melbourne, Australia. David writes to tell us that Rob put him in the doghouse with his significant other… This e-mail prompts Rob to consider hosting his 2014 trading contest down under — in Australia!

Next Rob hears from Derek King, a bicyclist from the UK countryside, who says a recent episode of The Traders Podcast helped encourage him to get proactive about putting his trading manual into writing. This inspires the heart of this episode, where Rob talks about the significance of writing something down that you want and then seeing that vision come to fruition later on in your life, often in unexpected ways.

Next Rob reads a great e-mail from Jessica (aka Rogue Traderette on Twitter), who responds to Rob’s episode about burnout. Jessica’s e-mail is quite inspiring, actually — a must-hear letter. And finally, Cole sends an encouraging poem about something that we should all probably do a lot more of… If you’re a trader, this episode is for you. Thanks for listening to The Traders Podcast.

Returning again after their Cigar Shop debut in Episode 179, Shonn Campbell and Matt LaCoco host The Traders Podcast again to talk about the magical potion of probability and to what extent trading is, in fact, gambling. Matt and Shonn discuss how traders are just in denial about being gamblers, asserting that traders aren’t much different from professional poker players or card counters who use statistics to make their money. Shonn and Matt suggest that trading is merely card counting — with candles! They also talk about “the gut feeling” and how it’s essentially the intuition of probability.

So, in Episode 196, the Cigar Shop guys will answer the questions: Is there a way to count cards in trading? And is there a way to gamble for a living? You definitely don’t want to miss this one! Thanks for listening to The Traders Podcast.

In another intimate solocast, your host Rob Booker gives some candid thoughts about the phenomenon of “burnout.” Rob defines it and describes how burnout affects traders, including himself. Rob talks about the 12 phases of burnout, and how it begins with a compulsion to prove yourself, which leads to the neglect of important things, like your own needs, your health or your children.

Rob also discusses the displacement of conflicts and how denial of your problems leads to withdrawing from the people in your life. And because this phenomenon affects traders in such a way that can lead to significant losses, Rob describes how to recognize the stages of burnout and offers a few steps to help you deal with it.

Rob also talks about the underlying concepts and recurring themes of The Traders Podcast, which are growing up and becoming a better person. Episode 193 is probably The Traders Podcast show you’ve been waiting for… After some brief discussion about the 2014 reality trading contest and Trader Interviews.com, your host Rob Booker talks about the U.S. Government Shutdown and its ramifications. Rob talks about what will happen to the stock market and the U.S. dollar if the government defaults on the national debt. Rob answers whether you should take all your money out of the stock market.

And even though he endeavors to provide a voice of reason in this time of great uncertainty, Rob gives some bleak predictions about the future, as well as some speculative trading advice that could yield a potentially epic seven-year buying opportunity! (Rob even describes specifically what he’d be willing to do with this buying opportunity.) Rob also reveals his grim concerns and predictions for the next 20 years, including what he thinks will be the next major crisis that will cause widespread panic. For Episode 192 of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker catches up with market strategist Neal Gilbert, author of “Braving the Rapids.” Rob asks Neal if he has strong opinions about gold (as well as other markets). Rob and Neal also talk about deep inter-market analysis and whether it’s necessary for understanding one’s market of choice.

Rob asks Neal how many screens he has open at any given time and asks what he watches for and why. They talk about patterns and Neal defines “the three-drive pattern.” This leads Rob and Neal into discussing somewhat obscure methods for predicting where the market is going, such as Murrey Math and moon-phase trading!

And finally Rob asks Neal what to do if a trader pulls up one time-frame chart and then starts scanning other time-frame charts only to second-guess the initial plan. Be sure to tune in. We think you’re going to enjoy this episode with our friend, Neal Gilbert. Thanks for listening!

Next Rob talks about the human tendency of wanting to know the end from the beginning, which moves into a conversation about how things often turn out well (albeit surprisingly) when we don’t have our course completely charted ahead of us.

Rob also talks about how traders want their trading system to be their “fixed point,” but in reality, traders themselves are their own fixed points. Here is another interesting episode of The Traders Podcast — once again — thanks to our listeners… Your host Rob Booker and the producer Jason Pyles begin the show by addressing a Spanish listener’s concerns that we did not show the proper love and respect for Spain in Episode 185. So, Rob expresses his feelings about Spain, and for the first time in Traders Podcast history, Jason has his wife, Natalie Pyles, say a few words. Next we got an e-mail from Steve, who’s asking for some clarification about when the London market opens, exactly… To get some additional insight on this question, Rob calls his friend Boris Schlossberg’s personal cell phone (while on the air) to get the answer.

We also received an e-mail from Bill, who wrote in with some results from his “Coin Toss EA.” And next we get a suggestion from Pablo, who asks if Rob would devise “The Turtle Trader Experiment” by assembling a team of turtle traders to be trained by Rob’s expert trader friends and then watch the students trade for a living with their own money. (You already know what Rob’s answer will be…) And finally, Dave writes in to the show to ask Rob to explain ETFs. Dave also asks whether Jennifer ever finished automating her trading system. Thanks for listening!

Episode 184 of The Traders Podcast will probably go down in the archives as one of our most provocative shows since Greg K. told us he could divine the future back in Episode 128. This episode explores what may be one of the simplest, yet craziest trading “systems” around… Your host Rob Booker catches up with his old friend Chris Mystic, a veteran of the currency market who decided to start trading randomly and entered a contest against other traders!

The premise: Chris works for Traders Laboratory, and in an attempt to keep the subscribers entertained, he decided to conduct an experiment for one month: At the New York open, he’d flip a coin and if it was heads, he’d go long on the Euro dollar, and if it was tails, he would go short on the Euro dollar. He’d flip the coin 30 minutes before actually taking the trade. And he set some rules, such as it would be a 1:1 risk-to-reward, and 20 pips take profit, 20 pips stop-loss, and if the trade hasn’t closed by 5 p.m., then he’d close it manually. And as mentioned above, Chris entered this random trading account into a trading contest with some intriguing results!

So, as you might expect from your intrepid host, Rob tries to make sense of this madness and discusses how to turn it into an actual trading system. Naturally. Why wouldn’t we? Thanks for listening.

In Episode 183, your host Rob Booker talks with Tim Hollingsworth, a motorcyclist from Australia who’s been a trader since 2001. Tim says you don’t have to know what’s going to happen in the market, in order to make money. Rob and Tim spend some time drawing parallels between motorcycling and trading and also the real estate business and trading. In this show you’ll hear Tim talk about the reasons why he tries to avoid speaking to people about trading. And you’ll also hear Tim offer a provocative opinion about how he thinks trading is gambling. You won’t want to miss this one! Thanks for listening.

Your host Rob Booker wasn’t able to record Episode 182, so Jason the producer gets to chat with “The Coach” — Scott Welsh, co-creator of the Bossilator course and a peak-performance instructor who resides in Columbus, Ohio. Scott and Jason begin by talking about Sin City — Las Vegas, Nevada — and why they’re so fond of it. This leads to a conversation about trading conferences in Vegas. And then Scott and Jason get around to the matter at hand: automated trading.

Jason asks Scott how he can make a living from a strategy that only produces 12 to 13 traders per year. Scott also talks about the challenge of resisting the temptation to interfere with your automated system, which leads to a discussion about discipline and trading psychology. Jason asks Scott who can benefit from automated trading, and they talk about finding an automated trading system (and a programmer) that’s right for you. Listen and subscribe!

In Episode 181 of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker chats with one of Jason’s favorite podcasting friends, Mr. Willis Wheeler. Willis is a big-time podcaster who’s a co-host on many different shows. He hails from the D.C. area and loves professional wrestling, movies, comic books, superheroes and he probably has one of the most unique voices in podcasting! (Yes, that’s his real voice.)

Naturally, Rob turns Willis’s interests into an episode about trading. Rob talks to Willis about collecting and the concept of getting something before anybody knows it’s special and holding onto it long enough for it to become valuable. This, of course, has metaphorical parallels with position trading.

Enjoy the show, and if you love Willis’s voice as much as everybody else does, check him out on his other podcasts below! Thanks for listening.

Episode 180 is another listener mail bag show, where your host Rob Booker begins by asking the producer, Jason Pyles, about his five other podcasts (links and descriptions can be found below). Then we dive into the mail bag:

Pablo writes to ask about brokers and bankruptcy. Nate thinks Matt LaCoco, Shonn Campbell and a number of other Rob Booker cohorts should have their own podcasts! James wrote in to request more Matt LaCoco, which leads into a discussion of sports drink flavors, which leads into a discussion about Fly Boarding. Peter writes to ask how to listen to The Traders Podcast on his iPhone. James sent in a comment about Jesse Livermore. Daljit had a question for Rob about his own personal trading. And Alan asks about “Booker reversal tabs.” All of this — and so much more trading-related commentary — in Episode 180 of The Traders Podcast.

In Episode 179, we bring you a little treat that’s a change of pace… Your host Rob Booker loves to hear what our fellow trading friends are thinking about — especially when those friends are Matt LaCoco and Shonn Campbell. Naturally, Rob sent them a digital audio recorder to capture their conversations about trading. … Naturally.

So, what you’re about to hear is a 20-minute excerpt of what was originally a 70-minute conversation between Shonn and Matt as they hang out at The Cigar Shop. This episode is a lot of fun, but it takes a little bit of concentration to listen to because there’s a great deal of ambient noise in the background, including a fountain and other people’s voices. But we sometimes like to capture the raw conversations that traders have “out in the field.”

Matt and Shonn discuss a number of topics, including the pitfalls of investing too much time and effort into trading; adding to — and over-complicating — your charts; why the “Great Bear of Wall Street” himself, Jesse Livermore, wasn’t a big deal after all; an unhealthy fascination with the machismo method for making money; several “don’ts” that are indicative ways to tell if you’ve already lost; why it’s difficult to trade strictly from indicators and the idea that perhaps planning out a trade on indicators isn’t really planning a trade at all; and if you can believe this — Matt and Shonn also cover some ground that we’ve probably never talked about on The Traders Podcast before: the secret to training your kids to be good traders.

Don’t miss it — this fun episode is worth your time. Thanks, Shonn and Matt!

Episode 178 is one of those episodes where your host, Rob Booker, delves into a topic that you’ve probably been waiting to hear about: How to Grow a Small Trading Account Into Something Much Bigger. A must-listen episode — for sure. To help Rob with this discussion, we have special guest Bradley Fried, the CEO of Rob Booker Japan.

So, here’s the premise: Rob has been getting more and more questions lately from newer traders or those who recently took a break from their trading. And one question keeps coming up:

I’m starting with a smaller account, but I heard you need at least $50,000 to $100,000 in order to trade for a living… so, how am I supposed to do this, if I’m starting with a small account?

Brad and Rob offer some great discussion to address this question. Brad talks about making your trading more of a process — and how process is a mental posture against the problem of using the market and trying to get profit from it. Rob and Brad also talk about the role of fear in trading (and where it comes from). All of this and so much more is available for you in Episode 178.

And by the way, you can support the podcast by checking out an upcoming trading course on “How to Grow a Small Account Into Something Big,” offered by Bradley Fried and Rob Booker.

For Episode 177, your host Rob Booker speaks with veteran trader Jared Johnson, the CEO, founder and president of Day Traders FX.com about August trading. First Rob and Jared bring you an update on their charity trading account. Next Jared laments that the market has been so “August-ey” this month, which leads Rob to talk about his history of August trading and what had made this year different for him. Rob and Jared discuss how sometimes we think our trading system is broken, but in reality, the market conditions are just not favorable for trading. They talk about the trap that people who trade for a living fall into, namely, thinking they must be in the markets every day and refusing to take a vacation, in order to avoid “missing something.”

Jared talks about the popular practice of bragging about how busy we are and how busyness is en vogue. Rob discusses knowing when to walk away because you’re not at your peak-performance level. And Rob and Jared chat about learning what you don’t do well and then adjusting accordingly. All of this and more in Episode 177 of The Traders Podcast. Don’t miss it!

This episode is one that many listeners have been hoping to hear: Back on Episode 159 of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker invited our audience to write to us and let us know your favorite personal mantra — and the person who submits the best mantra (in Rob’s estimation) will win a $100 gift certificate to Amazon.com.

So, Jason the producer reads through a number of favorite mantras submitted by the listeners — with the winning submission among them — as well as an impromptu runner-up winner who will be awarded a $25 gift certificate to Amazon.com. Episode 175 is a classic Traders Podcast episode… First you’ve got your host, Rob Booker, riffing on the newsworthy Steven A. Cohen and his giant hedge fund, which is now under indictment. Rob muses about whether SAC Capital cheated, and he underscores the Federal Government’s ingenious money management technique… All this naughtiness inspires Rob to ask whether there will be a “Return of The Honest Man,” and whether you’d cheat to profit financially (if you were sure of not getting caught). And as it naturally would, this train of thought leads Rob into a discussion of steroid use in Major League Baseball.

Next Rob addresses a listener e-mail from Brian about focusing on what’s important first and prioritizing your day of trading. And all of this begins with Rob and Jason coming clean about what the heck happened with the comment backlog on The Traders Podcast Web site. Thank you for listening — enjoy!

During Episode 174 of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker and the producer Jason Pyles sift through the mailbag. First up — FX Outlier asked when we were going to hear all of Brad’s 18 Rules of Trading. Rob answers and then briefly talks about a few of Brad’s trading rules. Radoslav writes in to ask about The Traders Podcast theme song. Scott (FatBeeTrader) leaves a comment in response to Episode 173. We receive a question from Chris about approving comments on the podcast Web site. Keith writes to recommend a TV show called “Skins.” (A photo from that program is pictured above.)

Rob talks about having a personal rule of not trading while you’re sick. Marius answers Rob’s question about Gold from Episode 171. Then we discuss the incredible film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and its profundity. And Rob also talks about how baseball player Alex Rodriguez and Jeff Bezos have had some significant news coverage of late. As you can see, this episode is a random buffet of topical treats. Enjoy! In Episode 173, your host Rob Booker begins with a reading of Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken,” a poem that Rob says has a direct application to trading. So, Rob uses this poem as a launching point and explains a few valuable lessons to benefit any trader. During the course of this discussion, Rob talks about phenomena such as the way most traders don’t hang on to their winners — or perhaps more accurately —most traders don’t have a profit target.

Rob says he’s infuriated by an epidemic of not focusing; he says it’s time for you decide what you’re going to focus on — including what kind of trader you are, and what kind of person you’re going to be in the market. Rob talks about being afraid of what’s to come on your path up ahead. Rob says “The Road Taken” is the “fun” road, but trading is not supposed to be fun. Trading is not an ice cream cone. And Rob closes with a list of what trading is (and what it is not). Good stuff — listen!

In Rob’s absence today, the Producer Jason Pyles is pleased to bring back guest host Bradley Fried, the CEO of Rob Booker Japan. At Rob’s request, Brad takes some time to discuss his 18-mile bicycle ride, and as is a steady tradition on this podcast, we draw parallel, metaphorical principles to trading. Everything relates back to trading.

Brad says that riding a bike and trading require similar skills. We’ll save the bicycle parallels for the show, but some of the trading-related concepts that Brad addresses are the following:

— the futility of thinking we can force the market to do our bidding
— working through challenging circumstances that are not ideal
— feeling impatient about making lots of money quickly
— the key skills of knowing when to keep going and knowing when to stop
— the psychology of moving past a loss
— removing pressure from our trading by letting go of expectations
— and more!

Brad also answers a listener’s e-mail question about choosing a broker. And finally, we wrap up this episode with Brad’s parting words of wisdom for your trading this summer. Tune in!

During Episode 171, your host Rob Booker speaks with “The Coach” — Scott Welsh, co-creator of the Bossilator course and a peak-performance instructor who resides in Columbus, Ohio. Rob and Scott tackle an e-mail from an inquisitive and concerned listener who goes by “Space Pip” (on Twitter). Apparently, Space Pip has been hearing more and more lately that there are spikes in the FX market that have been caused by computer algorithms, so Rob and Scott address the veracity of this theory.

Of course, this leads to Rob’s vision of what would actually happen if computers took over the world. Along the way, Rob takes a stab at describing what a spike is and where spikes come from. And this e-mail leads Scott to worry a little about the presence of “the world is out to get me” mentality. Oh, and don’t miss Rob’s radical solutions for solving insider trading! For Episode 170, your host Rob Booker speaks with Mr. Steady himself — veteran trader Jared Johnson, the CEO, founder and president of Day Traders FX.com, about the concept of “dress for success” and whether this strategy has any merit — especially for traders. Rob and Jared also discuss other requisite preparations (such as sufficient rest) that they bring to the table for each new day of trading.

Rob asks Jared why he trades (instead of doing something else). Rob also asks Jared why he’s still trading and if it brings him happiness. Rob even asks Jared what’s the most amount of money he’s ever lost on a single trade and what kept him going after that point. Rob asks Jared what he’s looking to get out of trading. We think Episode 169 is a good time, and we think you’ll agree… First of all, our friend Keiron wrote and asked about purchasing every one of The Traders Podcast episodes in one fell swoop, so we entertain ourselves as we entertain that thought.

Rob also spends some time talking about our rocket ship stock market and the employment market. Are we in some kind of a fake recovery because the economy is not creating jobs fast enough to replace the jobs that were lost during the financial crisis? Rob discusses how the unemployment rate factors in — and how it doesn’t factor in the people who have given up and dropped out of the job market altogether. Rob notes that there are under-employed people who are making less than they used to, and how that’s throwing off the numbers, as well.

Other questions posed in this episode: Can the current unemployment rate tank the whole economy? Are we looking at a potential double-dip recession? Has the world economy changed forever? These questions inspire Rob to talk about how we trade our perceptions and how we trade our stories (and not what’s in front of us). Rob says we should play the market where it is, and not where we think it should be…

We also dip into the mailbag and read comments from Matt about NLP and an e-mail from Brian regarding Apple, which leads Rob to pose the question: Has Apple become Microsoft? Rob also asks what will be the next latest and greatest thing? (Rob invites you to write and tell us what you think the next big thing will be.)

In this valuable episode of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker talks with Bradley Fried, the CEO of Rob Booker Japan, about Brad’s wild week (last week), when some of his positions went out of control against him. Brad describes his week and how he came out of it. This conversation leads to a number of important discussion topics, such as: How to Know When You’re Finished Trading During a Good Week, and If You’re in a Hole, Do You Stop Digging (or Just Get a Smaller Shovel)?

Also, Rob describes the three routes someone can take when they’ve experienced a bad week in the market, and he describes how massively disastrous losing streaks begin. Brad talks about what he looks for when he’s reassessing the trades that went wrong, and he also spends a little time talking about his personal lifestyle as a trader. We have a very special episode of The Traders Podcast for you today that, oddly enough, isn’t directly about trading at all. … Or is it? This recording was made in May of 2012 for The Goals Podcast (but was never released). It features your host Rob Booker and the producer, Jason Pyles — along with peak-performance coach and trader, Scott Welsh. Our special guest in this episode is a man named Kevin Buetts, who is a professional arm wrestler of 10 years. In 2005, Kevin took 5th place in the World Arm Wrestling Championship in Tokyo, Japan.

During this episode, you’ll hear Rob, Scott and Jason talk to Kevin about climbing through discouragement to achieve greatness. We cover topics such as, how we know if we’re destined for greatness; what motivates us to embark on a goal; the idea that we may already come pre-packaged with raw talent (or is there no such thing as raw talent?). We talk about the humbling journey toward greatness and the fire of determination that seems to burn below the surface of those who become great at something. We talk about pressing forward when the dark time comes and the various roles of fear in achieving greatness. So, if there’s something you want to achieve greatness in — such as trading — then Episode 166 is a must-listen!

This is a very interesting question, and Rob and Jared rise to the occasion with some great solutions for David. The second question is an e-mail from Robert who asks, “What type of trader am I?,” which leads to a great discussion about identifying where one fits in the markets (and if that even matters at all)… Here again, Rob and Jared deliver for Robert, in an episode that we consider to be “classic Traders Podcast” material. Episode 164 opens with your host, Rob Booker, and the producer, Jason Pyles, talking with Jared Johnson (the founder and lead trader at Day Traders FX.com) about summer movies — and in particular — Brad Pitt’s “World War Z.” And as you might expect, this conversation leads into an analogous chat about trading and whether “movement is life,” as is suggested in “World War Z.”

The main event in this episode is when Rob and Jared both choose to tell a story about a recent trade they took. Rob, who is a self-proclaimed divergence trader, aims to explain why divergence doesn’t work, and why it should usually be avoided. But somehow, Rob’s story spirals out of control and becomes some bizarre alternate ending to the Hugh Grant, Julia Roberts film, “Notting Hill.” Then Jared regales us with a tale of Aussie Dollar trading, and Rob asks him to define “an early exit.” Good stuff. We have a surprise development for you for Episode 162 … Your usual host, Rob Booker, was on the road while we were recording, so we asked Bradley Fried, the CEO of Rob Booker Japan, to stand in as a guest host of The Traders Podcast! And we think you listeners will enjoy hearing from Brad, because he discusses three of his 18 trading rules.

Brad talks about Rule No. 15, which addresses how placing expectations of wealth or solving financial problems with trading injects the process with emotion and disables it. This is the rule where Brad says to focus on process, not profits. Brad also discusses his Rule No. 14, which encourages you to make your trading an active and creative process, not a mechanical one. And Brad also tells us about Rule No. 18, which involves the practice of rewarding yourself. You don’t want to miss this episode — Brad tears it up! Join us, and feel free to leave your comments at the bottom of these show notes.

In this wild episode of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker talks with Market Strategist Neal Gilbert, who is the author of “Braving the Rapids,” an eBook trading strategy that Rob says is reasonably simple, and yet, still powerful enough to be consistently profitable. Rob asks Neal to discuss certain aspects of his eBook, including the five stages of grief as applied to the markets, where Neal explains how Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance can, unfortunately, apply to traders.

Rob also discusses some e-mail feedback he recently received from someone who was deeply offended by a story told in Episode 158 about something Rob’s previous employees did on a business trip. Rob apologizes and expresses his unconventional belief that people shouldn’t be embarrassed about their behavior. This leads to a discussion about how we are often embarrassed over our mistakes, even if they were the result of an earnest attempt based on good intentions. Rob calls himself “the first mistake-maker,” and he talks about examining what aspect of our lives is holding us back from getting what we really want.

You don’t want to miss this one, especially the off-the-cuff shenanigans that occur after the podcast…

In this memorable episode of The Traders Podcast about “Fear and Timing,” your host Rob Booker and the producer, Jason Pyles, answer a valuable e-mail inquiry from a podcast listener named Jason, who asks us how to know when it’s the right time to make the necessary sacrifices to become a successful trader.

Jason the listener also asks how one has the confidence to step out in faith and take that risky leap into the darkness. He also asks how to address the resistance of disapproving family and friends who view such actions as being reckless, foolish and irresponsible.

Naturally, Rob answers these questions with all the fiery conviction and honesty that you’ve come to expect from him. And Jason the producer also offers some heart-to-heart answers, since Jason the listener also directed these questions at him.

Also in this episode, you’ll hear Rob describe a Tweet that made him want to throw the Starbucks furniture through the windows, and you’ll hear a few stories from both Rob and Jason. Thanks for listening!

In this 49-minute, extended episode of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker chats with Matt LaCoco and Shonn Campbell about all the usual topics that you’d expect — psychics, yaks and traveling through the time-space continuum — sure, but they also discuss the following:

Personal mantras for life; the purpose in having someone to talk with about trading; the practice of skipping the first trade of each day, what it can do for your trading, and if this rule applies to automated trading systems; since robots never get emotional (but humans do), then why does anyone ever want to run their trading account in a discretionary fashion?; the role of intuition or “gut feelings”; the dangers of becoming obsessed with extraordinarily profitable days in the market and the way these big days can alter our thinking about trading; ceasing to worry about “What Could Have Been”; getting fed up with our pitfalls to the point that we’re motivated enough to stop falling into the same traps… just to name a few.

Leave a comment below and let us know your personal mantra! The best mantra submitted within one week of this podcast (by June 24, 2013) will receive a $100 Amazon gift certificate! Thanks for listening. [Note: A reading of some mantra submissions and the winning mantra itself can be heard in Episode 176.]
