Podcast Episodes – Traders Podcast

In Rob’s absence today, the Producer Jason Pyles is pleased to bring back guest host Bradley Fried, the CEO of Rob Booker Japan. At Rob’s request, Brad takes some time to discuss his 18-mile bicycle ride, and as is a steady tradition on this podcast, we draw parallel, metaphorical principles to trading. Everything relates back to trading.

Brad says that riding a bike and trading require similar skills. We’ll save the bicycle parallels for the show, but some of the trading-related concepts that Brad addresses are the following:

— the futility of thinking we can force the market to do our bidding
— working through challenging circumstances that are not ideal
— feeling impatient about making lots of money quickly
— the key skills of knowing when to keep going and knowing when to stop
— the psychology of moving past a loss
— removing pressure from our trading by letting go of expectations
— and more!

Brad also answers a listener’s e-mail question about choosing a broker. And finally, we wrap up this episode with Brad’s parting words of wisdom for your trading this summer. Tune in!

During Episode 171, your host Rob Booker speaks with “The Coach” — Scott Welsh, co-creator of the Bossilator course and a peak-performance instructor who resides in Columbus, Ohio. Rob and Scott tackle an e-mail from an inquisitive and concerned listener who goes by “Space Pip” (on Twitter). Apparently, Space Pip has been hearing more and more lately that there are spikes in the FX market that have been caused by computer algorithms, so Rob and Scott address the veracity of this theory.

Of course, this leads to Rob’s vision of what would actually happen if computers took over the world. Along the way, Rob takes a stab at describing what a spike is and where spikes come from. And this e-mail leads Scott to worry a little about the presence of “the world is out to get me” mentality. Oh, and don’t miss Rob’s radical solutions for solving insider trading! All this and so much more in Episode 171 of The Traders Podcast.

For Episode 170, your host Rob Booker speaks with Mr. Steady himself — veteran trader Jared Johnson, the CEO, founder and president of Day Traders FX.com, about the concept of “dress for success” and whether this strategy has any merit — especially for traders. Rob and Jared also discuss other requisite preparations (such as sufficient rest) that they bring to the table for each new day of trading.

Rob asks Jared why he trades (instead of doing something else). Rob also asks Jared why he’s still trading and if it brings him happiness. Rob even asks Jared what’s the most amount of money he’s ever lost on a single trade and what kept him going after that point. Rob asks Jared what he’s looking to get out of trading. Some interesting questions with some interesting answers… Don’t miss it!

We think Episode 169 is a good time, and we think you’ll agree… First of all, our friend Keiron wrote and asked about purchasing every one of The Traders Podcast episodes in one fell swoop, so we entertain ourselves as we entertain that thought.

Rob also spends some time talking about our rocket ship stock market and the employment market. Are we in some kind of a fake recovery because the economy is not creating jobs fast enough to replace the jobs that were lost during the financial crisis? Rob discusses how the unemployment rate factors in — and how it doesn’t factor in the people who have given up and dropped out of the job market altogether. Rob notes that there are under-employed people who are making less than they used to, and how that’s throwing off the numbers, as well.

Other questions posed in this episode: Can the current unemployment rate tank the whole economy? Are we looking at a potential double-dip recession? Has the world economy changed forever? These questions inspire Rob to talk about how we trade our perceptions and how we trade our stories (and not what’s in front of us). Rob says we should play the market where it is, and not where we think it should be…

We also dip into the mailbag and read comments from Matt about NLP and an e-mail from Brian regarding Apple, which leads Rob to pose the question: Has Apple become Microsoft? Rob also asks what will be the next latest and greatest thing? (Rob invites you to write and tell us what you think the next big thing will be.)

Oh, and we talk about Pets.com. Good stuff. Join us!

In this episode, your host Rob Booker and the producer dip into The Traders Podcast mailbag to hear some listener feedback. First, we read part of a short e-mail from Heidi, who has a tremendous commitment to listening to The Traders Podcast — even in the face of potentially mortal injury… And next we read about the journey of a trader in Australia named Althea. This e-mail leads Rob into a valuable conversation about knowing when it’s time to stop and the power of stopping. Tune in and subscribe! Thanks for listening!

In this valuable episode of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker talks with Bradley Fried, the CEO of Rob Booker Japan, about Brad’s wild week (last week), when some of his positions went out of control against him. Brad describes his week and how he came out of it. This conversation leads to a number of important discussion topics, such as: How to Know When You’re Finished Trading During a Good Week, and If You’re in a Hole, Do You Stop Digging (or Just Get a Smaller Shovel)?

Also, Rob describes the three routes someone can take when they’ve experienced a bad week in the market, and he describes how massively disastrous losing streaks begin. Brad talks about what he looks for when he’s reassessing the trades that went wrong, and he also spends a little time talking about his personal lifestyle as a trader. We highly recommend this episode! Thanks for listening.

We have a very special episode of The Traders Podcast for you today that, oddly enough, isn’t directly about trading at all. … Or is it? This recording was made in May of 2012 for The Goals Podcast (but was never released). It features your host Rob Booker and the producer, Jason Pyles — along with peak-performance coach and trader, Scott Welsh. Our special guest in this episode is a man named Kevin Buetts, who is a professional arm wrestler of 10 years. In 2005, Kevin took 5th place in the World Arm Wrestling Championship in Tokyo, Japan.

During this episode, you’ll hear Rob, Scott and Jason talk to Kevin about climbing through discouragement to achieve greatness. We cover topics such as, how we know if we’re destined for greatness; what motivates us to embark on a goal; the idea that we may already come pre-packaged with raw talent (or is there no such thing as raw talent?). We talk about the humbling journey toward greatness and the fire of determination that seems to burn below the surface of those who become great at something. We talk about pressing forward when the dark time comes and the various roles of fear in achieving greatness. So, if there’s something you want to achieve greatness in — such as trading — then Episode 166 is a must-listen!

In Episode 165, your host Rob Booker is joined by Jared Johnson (the founder and lead trader at Day Traders FX.com), to help answer some listener e-mail questions. The first question is an e-mail from David, who’s having a problem with a chat room moderator who won’t stop asking him to share information about his trades! This is a very interesting question, and Rob and Jared rise to the occasion with some great solutions for David. The second question is an e-mail from Robert who asks, “What type of trader am I?,” which leads to a great discussion about identifying where one fits in the markets (and if that even matters at all)… Here again, Rob and Jared deliver for Robert, in an episode that we consider to be “classic Traders Podcast” material. Thanks for listening, and feel free to e-mail us with your questions!

Episode 164 opens with your host, Rob Booker, and the producer, Jason Pyles, talking with Jared Johnson (the founder and lead trader at Day Traders FX.com) about summer movies — and in particular — Brad Pitt’s “World War Z.” And as you might expect, this conversation leads into an analogous chat about trading and whether “movement is life,” as is suggested in “World War Z.”

The main event in this episode is when Rob and Jared both choose to tell a story about a recent trade they took. Rob, who is a self-proclaimed divergence trader, aims to explain why divergence doesn’t work, and why it should usually be avoided. But somehow, Rob’s story spirals out of control and becomes some bizarre alternate ending to the Hugh Grant, Julia Roberts film, “Notting Hill.” Then Jared regales us with a tale of Aussie Dollar trading, and Rob asks him to define “an early exit.” Good stuff. Don’t miss it!

Trader Tech TalkDuring Episode 163, your host Rob Booker interviews a fellow podcaster and friend of the show, John Verbrugge, who is the host of Trader Tech Talk, a new podcast that addresses the tech of trading, including trading strategies, algorithmic trading systems, programming concepts, quantitative analysis and even some quantitative finance.

Rob asks John what inspired him to create Trader Tech Talk, and he talks to John about his background in programming. Rob and John also discuss which programming language might be an optimal starting point for someone planning to begin automated programming. Rob and John talk about the concept of “simplicity,” and Rob has John verify the veracity of a rumor that John is presently working on a book. We’re excited for you to listen to this episode, because Rob and Jason want to recommend the Trader Tech Talk podcast to all you trading podcast-lovers out there!
