Welcome to Episode 308 of The Traders Podcast. In the previous show, your host Rob Booker and Jason the producer talked about occasionally revisiting some of the more noteworthy conversations of the 300-plus episodes of The Traders Podcast. So, what you’re about to hear is a re-release of Episode 40, which originally aired on April 25, 2012. The title of that episode is “Where and Why We Trade for a Living.” In that particular episode, Rob was joined by The Coach Scott Welsh, who talked about goal-setting. They also discussed whether the location you trade from affects your trading, and whether you can actually trade from anywhere in the world. Episode 40 also introduced a new segment called “Dumb Things That Rob Does…” But the main reason Jason the producer felt Episode 040 is one for the ages is because of a remarkable epilogue that Rob delivers, where he describes all the reasons why we trade. It may very well be some of the most powerful content in the history of The Traders Podcast — a must-listen. Flashback with us! The markets are jittery today, says Rob Booker, the host of The Traders Podcast. In Episode 290, Rob tells us why now is an unprecedented time in economic history. He talks about how Janet Yellen, the new chairman of the Federal Reserve, is leading her first meeting where policy could change. Returning to a more typical and positive vibe, Episode 285 of The Traders Podcast features your host Rob Booker and Jason the producer talking about some of their favorite quotations. Rob relates these quotes to trading, naturally. Rob asserts that people generally do what they want to do, regardless of their reasons given. Rob reads a quote from a forthcoming trading book by Shonn Campbell called FX Inventory, which encourages traders to be free from the burden of false precision. He cites another portion of the book that suggests that trading is about playing offense and defense at the same time. Rob also asserts that your ability to make money is directly proportional to your ability to calm the hell down. Rob says that dramatic people make the worst traders. And we conclude this episode with a voicemail from actor Morgan Freeman, who tries his hand at reciting The Traders Podcast intro! Thanks for listening. Jason the Producer here. In this rambunctious and unusual episode, your host Dark Rob responds to some critical listener feedback from Vali and another from Bob. I won’t describe it any further, because the joy is in the journey, and it’s hilarious to hear Rob (an otherwise easy-going guy) get so wound up while speaking his mind. You may hear a side of Rob in this episode that you never knew existed… As always, we still welcome all listener feedback, but depending on what you write, I can’t promise you won’t ignite a fiery episode like this one. For Episode 263, your host Rob Booker is solo-broadcasting from Paris, France. Rob talks about a friend of his who made $21,000 trading a counter-trend system. Then Rob discusses another friend who made $8,000, and he did not close all of his losing trades immediately. So, Rob gives some tips on how to trade in a different way, other than closing losing trades immediately. Instead, in this episode, you’ll hear Rob give a prescription for more positivity. He also says trading mistakes are never about trading. Next we move in to our listener feedback, with an e-mail from Calvin who asks if it’s illegal to trade with an off-shore broker. Then Scott asks about brokers, the MT4 Platform and the Asian Session. Scott also asks Jason if he has started trading yet, and he inquires whether Rob and Jason are religious, which leads to an inevitable discussion about whether God helps traders! It has been exactly 132 episodes since we last had a TraderRadio Flashback! For those who don’t know, TraderRadio.net (circa 2008 – 2009) was the precursor to The Traders Podcast. We sometimes enjoy looking back at the concerns of the day five years ago and comparing how they relate to our present trading. So, in this recording you’ll hear your host, Rob Booker, chatting with his old friends Corbin Layton and Joshua Hauck (the Ohio River swimmer) in an episode recorded on June 15, 2009, titled “Calamity, Collapse and Trading Redemption.” Rob and the boys talk about the transformation that occurs within a trader after experiencing a margin call (or some other humbling experience). And they also spend some time talking about some news items pertaining to the summer of 2009, such as the Eurozone economy, as well as the dollar bear trend and more. Thanks for listening! And Rob talks about how important it is not to close winning trades too fast. If you’ve been struggling with trading for a living, this episode is not just for Andy Russell, it’s for you! We randomly talk about various incarnations of The Tonight Show, then we read comments from FX Outlier, Liftoff, Scott and Warren. In Episode 238, your host Rob Booker explores Matt LaCoco’s concept of allowance. But this conversation is probably just the tip of the iceberg. Rob would actually like to hear more from Matt on this topic. So, tell Matt LaCoco that you’d like to hear his thoughts on allowance on Twitter here: @MattLaCoco Be sure to ask him to write an essay on his blog about allowance. Rob also talks about ideas circling around ingratitude and being discontent with the state of what you have (or what you don’t have). Rob asks whether constant improvement is a myth, and he suggests that an over-emphasis on improvement can lead to a lot of unhappiness. We talk about the problems of interfering and getting in the way of what’s already working sufficiently. And this episode touches on the ideas of contentment, complacency, ambition and innovation. As a follow-up to Episode 234 of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker talks about the unsavory topic of losing money. He also talks about riding out your losses (strategically) and the Jesse Livermore mentality toward risk. This is an episode about traders for whom the money isn’t as important as The Game. Rob says this is a financially perilous approach to trading that can end disastrously, but it can also be a way to make some big profits. Next Rob talks about how in 2014 he has switched to trading for the bigger trends and the bigger moves. Rob is now going for much longer term trades, working from the four-hour charts. To illustrate Rob’s philosophies on long-term trading, he tells a true story about his friend, Matt, who wanted a two-seater, Mercedes coupe (circa the year 2000) but only wanted to pay a certain price for it… This story leads into a follow-up story about how Matt’s experience influenced Rob’s actions when he found himself in a comparable situation. Gox, a major currency exchanger, announced that it is halting all transactions on its exchange, which sent the price of bitcoin dropping… While Rob Booker expresses sympathy for anyone caught in the crossfire of this flash crash, he reassures that bitcoin will survive this — and the question is — does this provide a good time to buy bitcoin? Both Robs say yes! So, Rob Booker is going to jump on the wagon and start buying some bitcoin and put his first $1,000 into bitcoin, stage himself into something and build a position. Hi, and welcome to Episode 226 of The Traders Podcast, where your host Rob Booker teaches by using unusual topics like “Sea-Monkeys.” Actually, Rob’s discussion today is about Sea-Monkeys and how hard it is to run a company like Microsoft. The connection is clear… So, after entertaining us with his thoughts about the mysterious novelty pets, Rob discusses how Microsoft went on a gigantic search for a new CEO and recently appointed Satya Nadella. Rob talks about how this kind of high-profile CEO search often results in disappointment, and he explains how this occurs (using Sea-Monkeys). And of course, Rob does one of the things he does best — he makes this conversation applicable to your own trading. Be sure to listen! Rob’s book recommendation: Good to Great by Jim Collins Post-episode Sea-Monkey addenda from Jason the producer: According to Wikipedia, Sea-Monkeys are in fact brine shrimp. Here is a very interesting excerpt from the Wiki article: “The astronaut John Glenn took Sea-Monkeys into space on October 29, 1998 aboard Space Shuttle Discovery during mission STS-95. After nine days in space, they were returned to Earth, and hatched eight weeks later apparently unaffected by their travels.“ Links for this episode: Twitter: @RobBooker The Traders Podcast on Twitter: @TradersPodcast E-mail us! In this dark episode of The Traders Podcast, your host and Prophet of Doom, Rob Booker, talks with Jason the producer about the nature of companies in our new economy. Rob says companies these days don’t seem to end well. He says the nature of stocks traded on the NYSE 60 years ago look very different than those traded today. Quick — think about the first company that pops into your mind: Probably a technology stock of some sort, right? Google. Apple. Well, in Episode 225, Rob suggests that people wouldn’t commonly think of Vanderbilt Railroads or any other company that truly “makes” something tangible. Rob says that companies used to make things for us; now companies make us into things. Soylent Green is people. Google doesn’t make anything; instead, Google makes us do things! Google makes glasses so it can make you into a Google-bot. Instagram, for example, literally doesn’t make anything. We make the pictures! We are the factory workers! We are the production mechanism. Hear this and many more conspiracy theories during a memorable Episode 225 of The Traders Podcast. Thanks for listening. In Episode 222 of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker muses about Google’s stock and Google X’s “moon shot” projects. Rob wonders whether it’s appropriate for Google to be investing so much money into projects that will likely be unsuccessful. Rob reads through a number of these fantastical projects; then he considers what might be the equivalent of “moon shots” for traders. Rob asks if traders can (or should) be involved in their own moon shot projects, and then Rob proceeds to list some ideas of possible moon shots that traders can take. Next Rob talks about a book called Selective Forex Trading: How to Achieve Over 100 Trades in a Row Without a Loss by Don Snellgrove. All of this and more in Episode 222 of The Traders Podcast. For Episode 221 of The Traders Podcast, your host Rob Booker catches up with one of our favorite guests, the great Raghee Horner of Trade Forex Futures.com. First, Rob and Raghee talk about Timothy Ferriss’s concept of “The Four-Hour Work Week” and the feasibility of outsourcing one’s own life. That leads to a discussion of the merits and possibilities of trading for only one hour each day. Next Rob talks about the solitude that can come from being a trader, which he personally appreciates. Then we hear a tired, “Dark Rob” (as Raghee terms him) share some hilarious thoughts about how he doesn’t want to shoulder other people’s drama or personal tragedies anymore. Rob and Raghee agree that one must choose the people in life that one is willing to ride the roller coaster with, and similarly, one must pick the financial instruments with which one is willing to get involved. Raghee defines “tomato can currencies” and explains why these are important to her trading. All of this and so much more in Episode 221 of The Traders Podcast. Thanks for listening!
